History

The Ford Capri Mk2 launched in February 1974, bringing refined styling and improved comfort to Britain's most popular sports coupé. The XL trim level represented an intriguing footnote in Capri history - a short-lived specification that existed only from launch until September 1974, when it was replaced by the GL designation. This particular Purple Velvet example was first registered on 1st October 1974 by Taw Garages in Barnstable, Devon, making it one of the final XL models produced.

For over three decades, this distinctive Capri remained with the same Devon family, accumulating a documented 70,000 miles before being discovered by Lincolnshire-based enthusiast Stephen Reedman in March 2009. Captivated by the rare Purple Velvet colour and the car's unique registration plate, Reedman travelled to Devon unseen to collect his prize. After a minor roadside drama involving a blown fuse creatively repaired with silver paper, the Capri made the journey home.

The Reedman family - Stephen and his sons Scott and Mark - embraced their new acquisition, enjoying it at classic car events before commissioning a comprehensive restoration by Martin Pawson at Capri Gear. The project included careful bodywork restoration, engine rebuilding, and upgraded poly-bushed 2.8i suspension to enhance handling whilst maintaining authenticity. The finished car was featured in Classic Ford magazine in early 2013 and has since become a star attraction at classic car shows, drawing admirers wherever it appears.
