History

When Britain desperately needed heroes to rally the nation, RAF airman John Randall Daniel 'Bob' Braham answered the call with extraordinary courage and skill. An accomplished twin-engined fighter pilot, Braham pioneered a daring tactical innovation, flying 'freelance' hunting sorties alongside main RAF bomber formations over enemy territory. His strategy was brilliantly simple yet devastatingly effective: draw enemy nightfighters away from vulnerable bombers and eliminate them before they could strike. In this role, he's credited with shooting down at least four of the Luftwaffe's leading nightfighter aces, becoming the scourge of German defensive operations.

Britain's most decorated Fighter Command airman, Braham ended the war as the most successful British pilot operating twin-engined aircraft. He achieved 30 aerial victories total, with 19 scored under cover of darkness, establishing him as a leading nightfighter ace. Nine of his victories came whilst flying the de Havilland Mosquito on intruder missions, and his actions undoubtedly saved hundreds of Bomber Command airmen from Luftwaffe nightfighters. This model represents the Mosquito he borrowed from RAF No.613 Squadron on 5th March 1944, the aircraft in which he claimed his first Mosquito kill and continued his legendary campaign against Germany's nocturnal hunters.
