History

Known affectionately as the Fliegender Bleistift or 'Flying Pencil', the Dornier Do 17 earned its nickname from its remarkably slender fuselage design. The Z variant represented the most successful iteration of this distinctive bomber, with the Z-5 being the final major production version equipped with specialist survival and flotation equipment for operations over water.

This particular aircraft, W.Nr.2787 coded 7T+HH, was operated by 1./KüFlGr 606 and participated in a daring twilight raid on 11th October 1940, targeting aircraft factories around Liverpool. The mission quickly turned desperate when British radar detected the incoming formation, scrambling Spitfires from No.611 Squadron to intercept. In the ensuing engagement, this Do 17Z-5 took severe damage from the defending fighters, with smoke pouring from both engines as it fought to stay airborne.

Despite the catastrophic damage and losing two crew members who bailed out over Wales, the pilot demonstrated extraordinary skill and determination, nursing the crippled bomber back across the Channel to make a crash landing at Brest. This harrowing experience proved decisive for the unit - following this costly daylight operation, 1./KüFlGr 606 abandoned such missions entirely, restricting themselves solely to night-bombing sorties for the remainder of their operations.
