Land, Sky and Sea

Operation Overlord. The largest amphibious invasion in history to begin the liberation of Europe during the Second World War. After months of planning, events began on D-Day, June 6th 1944, with a huge fleet of military vessels carrying 160,000 troops across the English Channel to land on the beaches of Normandy. In the skies, paratroopers descended in advance of the main force to secure critical tactical positions and infrastructure. All of this was backed up by valuable air support from the RAF and USAAF.

Help from above

Allied aircraft operated in numerous roles beyond the famous paratrooper operations during June 6th 1944, with fighters covering the fleet against any enemy aircraft, bombers performing runs against hard targets on the Normandy coastline, and others running as anti-shipping patrols. As troops pushed inland and their numbers swelled to two million ashore by the end of August 1944, they were supported by fighters attacking enemy armour, and aircraft operating even further behind enemy lines in clandestine operations to aid intelligence on enemy positions.
